Machu Picchu Tickets: Why Booking Early Still Matters

Machu Picchu Tickets: Why Booking Early Still Matters

Machu Picchu tickets are the one part of a Peru trip you can’t leave to the last minute. The citadel limits how many people can enter each day. Every ticket is tied to a date, an entry time, a route and your passport. Once you buy it, you can’t change it.

In this guide, you’ll learn how Machu Picchu tickets work today. You’ll see why booking early still matters, even after Peru’s latest changes to online sales. You’ll also learn how a guided trip with Good Life Expeditions takes the logistics off your plate. That way, your energy goes into the moment you first see the citadel through the clouds.

How Machu Picchu Tickets Work in 2026

Peru’s Ministry of Culture sells Machu Picchu tickets through its official website, Tu Boleto. The site has a daily visitor limit. On regular days, about 4,500 people can enter. On high-season dates, the limit rises to about 5,600.

High season covers the busiest weeks of the year. In 2026, it runs from late June to early November, plus Easter week and the New Year holidays. These are also the dates most travelers want.

Timed entry and set routes

Each ticket includes a specific entry hour. Entry slots start early in the morning and run into the afternoon. If you arrive late, the grace period is short.

Inside, you follow a one-way route called a circuit. You choose it when you buy the ticket. A standard visit lasts up to about two and a half hours. You can’t go back once you’ve passed a section.

Your ticket carries your name

Machu Picchu tickets are personal. They’re issued with your name and passport number. You can’t transfer them to someone else, and they’re generally non-refundable.

On the day of your visit, staff check your ticket and your passport. Bring the same passport you used to book. A photo of it won’t do.

Why Booking Machu Picchu Tickets Early Still Matters

In September 2026, Peru changed how tickets are sold online. Buyers can no longer hold tickets for hours without paying. Now you pick your date and time, then pay within a short window. If you don’t, the ticket goes back on sale.

This change freed up tickets that had been blocked. It’s good news for travelers. Still, the daily limit stayed the same. Popular dates continue to fill up. Here’s why early planning still pays off.

Peak dates sell out first. The dry season, roughly May to October, is the most popular time to visit. Holidays fill quickly too. If you’re still choosing your dates, our guide to the best time to visit Peru can help.

Mountain hikes have small quotas. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain have their own daily limits. You book them as part of a specific route, so they go fast.

Your ticket must match your train. Most visitors reach Aguas Calientes, the town below the citadel, by train. Then a bus climbs the mountain road. Your entry time has to line up with both. One missed connection can cost you your visit.

Last-minute options are limited. A small number of next-day tickets are sold in person in Aguas Calientes. You need to be in town already, and there’s no guarantee you’ll get one. That’s a risky plan, especially for families.

How far ahead should you book?

For June through October and holiday weeks, book several months ahead. For shoulder months like April, May and November, you’ll usually have more flexibility. Rules can change during the year, so always check current conditions before you travel.

How a Guided Machu Picchu Trip Makes It Simple

Booking tickets, trains, buses and a guide on your own takes time. Each piece runs on its own schedule. When one changes, the others can fall apart.

With the Machu Picchu Getaway, our four-day trip from Cusco, our team handles all of it. We secure your entry ticket, your train, your bus and a local expert guide. Hotels, transfers and several meals are included too, so you only plan a few meals on your own. Our base in Peru means we know how the system works today, and we track changes as they happen.

Your guide brings the citadel to life. You’ll hear the stories behind the temples, terraces and stonework. You’ll also have someone who knows the route, the timing and the best spots to pause.

Good Life Expeditions is the travel brand of MEDLIFE. A part of what you invest in your trip stays in Peru and helps fund MEDLIFE’s projects in the communities you visit. If you’d like to understand why that matters, read about community-based tour operators in Cusco.
