Machu Picchu Circuits Explained: Which Route to Choose

Machu Picchu Circuits Explained: Which Route to Choose

Machu Picchu circuits shape your whole visit. When you book, you choose a date, an entry time and a route through the citadel. That route decides which temples you’ll walk past, which viewpoints you’ll reach and whether you’ll climb a mountain.

Many travelers only learn about the circuits at checkout. By then, the best options may be gone. In this guide, you’ll learn how the system works and what each circuit includes. You’ll also see which route fits your travel style, from first-time visitors to active hikers and families.

What Are the Machu Picchu Circuits?

Since June 2024, Peru’s Ministry of Culture has organized visits into three circuits. Together, they include ten routes. Each ticket is sold for one circuit and one route.

The routes are one-way. You walk in a set direction and can’t turn back. You also can’t switch to a different route once you’re inside. This system protects the site and keeps crowds moving.

A standard visit lasts up to about two and a half hours. Routes that include a mountain hike take longer.

The Three Machu Picchu Circuits at a Glance

Circuit 1: Panoramic

Circuit 1 focuses on the upper terraces and the high viewpoints. It passes the Guardian’s House, where the classic postcard photo of Machu Picchu is taken. This is the wide view of the citadel with Huayna Picchu rising behind it.

Circuit 1 has four routes. One adds the hike up Machu Picchu Mountain. Others reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) or the Inca Bridge. Some of these routes only open during high season.

The trade-off is simple. You get the best views, but you see fewer structures in the lower part of the citadel.

Circuit 2: Classic

Circuit 2 is the most complete walk through the main urban area. It’s the closest to the traditional visit before the new rules. You’ll see terraces, plazas, temples and the city’s famous stonework up close.

It has two routes. Both include a version of the classic photo, taken from a lower terrace. Neither includes a mountain hike. For many visitors, Circuit 2 is the best balance of history and views.

Circuit 3: Royalty

Circuit 3 explores the lower sector of the citadel. This area holds sacred and royal spaces, such as the Temple of the Condor. Most routes in this circuit stay low, so they skip the high viewpoints.

Circuit 3 is also where you’ll find routes paired with Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu and the Great Cavern. These hikes have their own small daily quotas.

Which Machu Picchu Circuit Is Right for You?

The best route depends on what you want from the day. Here’s a simple way to decide.

First-time visitors: Choose Circuit 2. You’ll see the heart of the citadel and still get a classic photo.

Photo lovers: Choose Circuit 1. The upper terraces give you the sweeping views most people picture when they think of Machu Picchu.

Active hikers: Look at the mountain routes. Machu Picchu Mountain is part of Circuit 1. Huayna Picchu is part of Circuit 3. Both are steep, with narrow stone steps and long drops. They’re a great challenge if you’re fit and comfortable with heights. These spots sell out first, so book early.

Families and travelers who prefer an easier day: Circuit 2 is usually the best fit. Keep in mind that every route includes stairs and uneven stone paths.

A note on weather and views

Clouds and fog can cover the citadel at any time of year. They often lift during the morning, but not always. Rain is more common from November to March. If clear views matter most to you, our guide to the best time to visit Peru will help you plan.

Some travelers book two different circuits on two different days. It’s a good option if you want to see the full citadel and you have time in your itinerary.
