What to Pack for Machu Picchu: A Checklist for US Travelers

What to Pack for Machu Picchu: A Checklist for US Travelers

Knowing what to pack for Machu Picchu can save you stress at the gate. The citadel has clear rules about bags and items. The weather can shift from cool and misty to warm and sunny in a single morning. And the train to Aguas Calientes has its own luggage limits.

This checklist is built for US travelers. You’ll learn which documents to carry, what to wear for the mountain weather and how to pack your daypack. You’ll also see the items you’ll need to leave behind. With the right bag, you’ll move through the day light, comfortable and ready for the view.

Documents and Essentials

Start with the things you can’t replace on the day.

  • Your original passport. It must be the same one used to book your entry ticket. Staff check both at the gate.
  • Your Machu Picchu ticket. If you travel with Good Life Expeditions, we handle it for you. It still helps to keep a copy on your phone.
  • Cash in Peruvian soles. Small bills are useful for lunch, snacks, restrooms and tips. Some places in Aguas Calientes only take cash.
  • A credit or debit card. Let your bank know you’re traveling to Peru.
  • Your phone and a power bank. You’ll take more photos than you expect.
  • Personal medications. Pack them in your daypack, along with a small first-aid kit.

What to Pack for Machu Picchu’s Weather

Machu Picchu sits on the edge of the cloud forest. Mornings are often cool and misty. By midday, it can feel warm and humid. Rain can fall in any season, though it’s more common from November to March.

Layers are the answer. Here’s what works:

  • A light, breathable base layer
  • A fleece or light sweater for the early morning
  • A waterproof rain jacket or poncho
  • Quick-dry pants or comfortable hiking pants
  • A sun hat and sunglasses
  • High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
  • Insect repellent, since biting insects are common in the area

Footwear

Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. The citadel has many stone stairs and uneven paths. Make sure your shoes are broken in before the trip. High heels and hard-soled shoes aren’t allowed inside.

For the standard circuits, sturdy sneakers or trail shoes work well. If you plan to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, light hiking boots give you more support.

Daypack Rules and Items You Can’t Bring

Machu Picchu has strict rules to protect the site. Knowing them ahead of time keeps your entry smooth.

Daypack size

You can bring a small backpack. The limit is about 15.7 x 13.7 x 7.8 inches (40 x 35 x 20 cm). Larger bags must be stored in the lockers outside the entrance.

Items not allowed inside

  • Umbrellas (bring a rain jacket instead)
  • Tripods, selfie sticks and drones
  • Food
  • Single-use plastic bottles (bring a reusable bottle)
  • Trekking poles with metal tips (rubber tips are sold in Cusco)
  • Strollers (a baby carrier works better)
  • Alcohol and aerosol cans

There are no restrooms inside the citadel. Use the facilities at the entrance before you start your route.

Train luggage limits

Trains to Aguas Calientes limit how much you can carry on board. On some services, the limit is about 11 pounds (5 kilograms) per person. The easy solution is to leave your large suitcase at your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Travel with just a small bag.
