How Many Days in Peru? 4, 7 and 10-Day Itineraries

How many days in Peru do you need? It’s one of the first questions travelers ask. The answer depends on what you want to see and how fast you like to travel. Peru packs coast, mountains and rainforest into one country, and moving between them takes time.

In this guide, you’ll compare three trip lengths: four, seven and ten days. You’ll see what each one covers and who it suits best. You’ll also learn how altitude and travel time shape your plans. That way, you can choose a trip that feels full without feeling rushed.

What Shapes Your Peru Itinerary

Before you pick a number of days, keep three things in mind.

Altitude takes time. Cusco sits at about 11,150 feet (3,400 meters). Most travelers need a slower first day there. Plan for it, especially if you fly in from the coast.

Travel days count. Flights from Lima to Cusco are short. Still, airport time, transfers and the train to Machu Picchu add up.

Seasons matter. The dry season in the Andes runs from about May to October. Rain is more common from November to March. Our guide to the best time to visit Peru explains what each season offers.

4 Days in Peru: Cusco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu

Four days is the shortest trip that still feels complete. It works well if you’re adding Peru to a longer trip, or if you have a short break from work or school.

The Machu Picchu Getaway is built for this length:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Cusco. After some rest, tour the city’s Inca temples and nearby ruins, like Sacsayhuamán.
  • Day 2: Explore the Sacred Valley. Then take an afternoon train to Aguas Calientes and spend the night.
  • Day 3: Take an early bus to Machu Picchu for a guided tour. Ride the train back and return to Cusco.
  • Day 4: Depart Cusco.

Best for: travelers who want the highlights in a short time.

Keep in mind: Lima isn’t included, so you’ll connect through it on your way to Cusco.

7 Days in Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu

A week is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors. It adds Lima to the classic route and gives you more time to adjust to the altitude.

Classic Peru follows this rhythm:

  • Days 1 and 2: Arrive in Lima. Tour the clifftop parks of Miraflores and the historic center.
  • Day 3: Fly to Cusco and take the rest of the day to settle in.
  • Day 4: Explore Cusco and the ruins around the city.
  • Day 5: Tour the Sacred Valley, then take the train to Aguas Calientes.
  • Day 6: Visit Machu Picchu with a local expert guide, then return to Cusco.
  • Day 7: Fly back to Lima for your onward travel.

Best for: first-time visitors who want both the coast and the Andes.

Keep in mind: the days are full, so pace yourself and stay hydrated.

10 Days in Peru: A Slower Way to Travel

With ten days, you can travel at a gentler pace. You’ll have time for extra walks, long meals and moments to simply sit in a plaza and watch daily life.

There are many ways to use the extra days:

  • Spend more time in Cusco and visit its quieter corners. Our list of Cusco hidden gems has great ideas.
  • Stay longer in the Sacred Valley, with time for markets, villages and hikes.
  • Add a food day in Lima and explore its famous restaurant scene.

A good starting point is Classic Peru, adjusted with extra nights. Our team can customize the itinerary around your interests and dates.

Best for: families, slow travelers and anyone who wants room to rest.
