Belmond Monasterio

Belmond Monasterio

Next door to Palacio Nazarenes, also a Belmond property is this carefully preserved former monastery, now a luxury boutique hotel. Unassuming from the street, the opulence and grandeur is revealed as soon as you walk into the lobby, featuring gilded artifacts and colonial artwork.

Perfectly located just around the corner from the Plaza de Armas (the main square) Cusco’s Cathedral and within walking distance of most of Cusco’s attractions, the Belmond Monasterio is the perfect luxury base for exploring Cusco, highly recommended by Good Life Expeditions.

A Historic Stay at Belmond Monasterio

The preserved sixteenth contrary monastery features original cloisters and three courtyards. Small and quiet oases, they offer the perfect retreat to relax, with monastic and classical music playing softly in the background. One is home to a 300-year-old white cedar tree, and others are filled with fragrant flowers.

Rooms are an eclectic mix of sizes and layouts, staying true to the original layout of the monastery. All feature Inca textiles, regional artwork and handmade textiles. These features and perfectly blended with all the contemporary amenities you’d expect from a five-star hotel. Flat screen TVs, iPod docking stations, Wi-Fi and mini bars are all standard. Marble bathrooms offer luxurious toiletries, and most feature bath tubs. Deluxe rooms offer their own patios and the opulent two-story junior suites include separate living and dining space, and secret gardens.

The hotel’s El Tupay bar and lounge offers tantalizing cocktails and snacks in a stunning colonial setting and formal dinners are served in the Illay Restaurant. The star architectural marvel is the breath-taking eighteenth-century chapel with massive oak doors, original frescos and paintings that date back to the Inquisition. With a capacity for 100, it’s used for special events and weddings.

A highlight of Belmond Monastery are the lavish opera nights, held three nights a week. Guests enjoy a fine-dining experience while opera singers perform and mingle between tables, surrounded by stunning historic setting.
