The White City

The stunning ‘White City’, Arequipa is Peru’s second largest city, located in the south of the country, and bestowed with the nickname for its white colonial architecture, built using white volcanic stone called ‘sillar’. This architecture is one of many Arequipa highlights.

Responsible Travel to Arequipa

With many historic sites and surrounded by five impressive volcanoes, some of which are visible from the city, Arequipa was named as a UNESCO World Heritage City, a much-deserved accolade for the city loved by locals and visitors alike.

Good Life Expeditions arranges trips to Arequipa in conjunction with the nearby Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world, and considered by many to be the source of the Amazon river.

In the city itself, Arequipa highlights include an impressive central square – the Plaza de Armas – one of the most beautiful in all of Peru, and the Santa Catalina monastery, founded in 1580. The expansive monastery is a treasure trove of beautiful architecture, historic rooms featuring colonial artwork and tranquil gardens.

Other Arequipa highlights include the Santa Teresa convent, museums and Jesuit churches, featuring unique baroque architecture. Good Life Expeditions can arrange city tours to take in all the Arequipa highlights, as well as day trips and multi-day trips into the nearby Colca Canyon.

Arequipa is also famous for its cuisine. The city lays claim to some of the most traditional and most-loved Peruvian dishes such as delicious thick seafood stews, slow-cooked pork dishes, and the famous rocoto relleno – a spicy type of bell pepper filled with meat, vegetables and topped with cheese. Of course we’re ready to recommend the best restaurants in Arequipa so you can sample them all.
