This is a great experience for art lovers, who instead of browsing through a museum or art gallery, want an authentic experience of the contemporary art scene in Lima – what’s happening right now with exciting and up and coming artists and street artists and how the art scene is evolving.
Urban Art in Lima
Monumental Callao is a contemporary art project in the historic port district of Callao, centered around the Ronald Building, now called Casa Fugaz. Originally founded in 1537 as the principle port in Lima, the area then fell victim to economic downfall, with many of the impressive colonial warehouses and homes left derelict. The Ronald building was a beautiful colonial structure built by a British engineer during the boom years. As part of the Monumental Callao project it has been lovingly restored, and now houses galleries, studio space for artists, shops, boutiques, cafes and a fun rooftop bar with impressive views out to sea.
The Monumental Callao project is not confined to just one building, but spills out into the streets and community which are at the heart of what they do through outreach and regeneration work.
Graffiti Tour and Interactive Galleries
There’s much to do and see on a Monumental Callao tour. Browse the galleries and studios of artists based within Casa Fugaz – with the chance to watch artists at work and speak to them about their latest projects.
A walking graffiti tour will take you through the streets surrounding the building – there are over 60 walls covered in street art by Peruvian and internationally acclaimed street artists. The bright and edgy paintings juxtapose with the traditional architecture in the area – a brilliant fusion of old and new. There’s also a graffiti workshop which is great fun for adults and kids.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a bite in one of the many restaurants in and around Casa Fugaz, with everything from Japanese, French patisserie to traditional Peruvian seafood.
