The Atacama Desert
Explore northern Chile with us on an expedition to the Atacama Desert. Here awaits a terrain so unique and so harsh that NASA tests Mars-bound equipment in Atacama before sending it to space. Adventure through the best of the region during your responsible trip with Good Life Expeditions.
Though there are endless sites to see, we will recommend the best Atacama highlights based on your interests. Start with a half day tour of the Valle de la Luna. With no life and no humidity in the valley, this is one of the most inhospitable places on the planet. But don’t let that deter you from visiting, as sunsets here are indescribably beautiful. Take a walk, bike ride, or car tour through the area before sitting at a lookout for the spectacular natural show of colors in the evening.
Visit the Tatio Geysers, a true manifestation of Mother Nature’s beauty. The volcanic geothermal field not only gives you a wild experience with geysers shooting 50 m (164 ft) into the air but also contrasting mountains and diverse flora and fauna make the site unlike any other in the world.
Tour through the most extensive plain in the area which will lead you to the Salar de Atacama. This salt flat is one of the most important lithium deposits on earth and is home to a myriad of flamingos. Then head to the small, picturesque town of Toconao, to wander through the streets decorated in original pumice architecture and a gorgeous old church. Locals of the area are known for their fine wool handicrafts.
The various lagoons of the region are another great way to spend a day. Perhaps head to Laguna Caxa, a staple of Los Flamencos National Reserve. This lagoon is located at 2,300 m (7,545 ft.) and is divided into several sections by salt crusts creating a mirror effect. Or head to the gorgeous Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons where little lakes are surrounded by multicolored mountains and endemic flora and fauna.
